Untamed Photo Safaris is proud to offer our guests one of the most exclusive photo safaris in Botswana. With a professional wildlife photographer, chartered flights, local experts, and extremely remote destinations, this tour is truly like no other safari in Botswana.

From the Kalahari Desert salt pans, to the vast flood lands of the Okavango Delta, and into the Kwando Reserve bordering Namibia, this 10-day fly in photo safari will show you Botswana in an incredible way. Not only will guests get to visit each location but you will be able to see the landscapes with an aerial view as you fly into each location, providing you with an entirely new perspective of the area.

During this tour, your photo host will be by your side to help you gain those professional level photographs. With tutorials throughout the safari, each guests will learn skills and techniques to feel more confident as a wildlife photographer.

NXAI PAN, MOREMI GAME RESERVE & KWANDO RESERVE

Our first destination is Nxai Pan, a large salt pan located in the Kalahari Desert. This location shows the harsh desert environment that many animals call home. Wildlife includes Lion, Zebra, Giraffe, Hyena, Elephant and more.

From Nxai Pan, we fly into the southern region of the Okavango Delta, known has Moremi Game Reserve. This vast wetland is ideal for hippo photography along with spotting elephants trailing through the waters to stay cool and hydrated. With the lodge right on the water, chances to photograph wildlife from the lodge is guaranteed.

The last stop on this photo safari is Kwando Reserve in the Northern most part of Botswana, bordering Namibia. This bushland area is home to many predators with our favourite being the African Wild Dog. Others include many Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and Hyena. Also photograph Elephants from the lodge as they wander through the grounds.

EQUIPMENT

RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT

CAMERA BODY:

Guests are encouraged to bring a camera body with a minimum of 24-megapixels to guarantee the best results while on safari. This can be mirrorless or a DSLR, as your photo host is experienced with both and will be able to offer assistance whenever need be.

A second camera body is always a great consideration, however, this is not mandatory. This can be used as a backup, or you can keep a second lens attached and switch back and forth between cameras.

LENSES:

A telephoto lens with a reach of at least 500 mm. This can be a fixed/prime lens or a zoom lens.

If you intend to bring a fixed/prime lens of 500 mm or more, you will also need a closer range lens. A 100 - 400 mm or similar is a great option, as this will allow you to get shots of wildlife that comes closer to the vehicle

If you are interested in taking landscape photographs during the trip, we recommend a wide angle lens that ranges anywhere between 12 mm - 105 mm. This can be used for landscapes, astro-photography, close range wildlife, and congregations of wildlife.

ITINERARY

DAY 1

ARRIVAL DAY

The first day is designed for all photography participants to arrive in Maun at their own leisure. Untamed Photo Safaris will arrange transfers from Maun International Airport (airport code MUB) for each photographer’s arrival. Guests who have arrived in advance and are already in the country/area should make their way to the Cresta Hotel in Maun on this day.

The tour will start at 6 pm on this day, where the group will meet for the first time. Your Photo Host will be awaiting you with welcome drinks as you go through the itinerary, ask any questions, and get to know the fellow photographers in your group.

After our briefing/meet and greet, we will move over to the restaurant for dinner. After dinner you will have the opportunity relax with the others in the group.

DAY 3

TWO PHOTO SAFARI OUTINGS

With an early wake up call for breakfast we will be ready to set off on a morning photo safari around 6:30am in the salt flats in search of predators of the Nxai Pan. We will visit the magnificently large "Baines Baobabs" for a quick break and chance to photograph these incredible trees.

Later we will return to the lodge for lunch but make sure your camera is nearby as regular sightings of Elephants can be seen drinking from the waterhole located in front of the lodge. During our time at the lodge before heading out again, your photo guide will offer tutorials and critique for all those interested.

A second photo safari will take us deep into the grassy and open plains of this national park where predators are seen drinking alongside herbivores at waterholes. We will explore this vast, dry area in search for all wildlife that takes our interest.

Finally we will return to the lodge where dinner will be waiting for your arrival. During this evening, guests are free to sit outside around the fire and experience the true African night sky with stars that light up the bushland of Botswana. If you are interested in sky scape photography, this is the prefect location due to the lack of light pollution in the area

DAYS 5 - 6

PHOTO SAFARI OUTINGS IN MOREMI

These two full days in Moremi will begin with an early wake up call with coffee, tea, biscuits, fruits and other breakfast being served in the restaurant. The group will be offered two safari outings each day. Dependent on the water levels, the activity will be one of the following: By Land (safari land cruiser), By Water (Mokoro or motor boat), or By Foot (optional, with armed ranger)

After breakfast, the group will commence on their morning photo safari. We will move through the wetlands in search of Hippopotamus, Giraffe, Elephant, Lechwe, Lion, Leopard, Wild Dog, numerous bird species and more. This outing will be approximately 3 to 4 hours in length.

We will return for lunch, overlooking the vast water system that attracts millions of animals each year. Lunch will be followed by an optional group photographic lecture and/or personal/group critique.

In the afternoon, we will set off for another exciting photo safari (either by boat or by land) into the marshy wetlands of the Moremi Game Reserve. These safaris will provide you with remarkable wildlife sightings where award winning wildlife photographs are just a click away. Dependant on guests and what has already been seen on the morning safari, we will be on the lookout for different photographic opportunities.

Dinner in Moremi is an incredible sensory overload for most guests. As you are enjoying your meal with the group, your ears will be buzzing as Hippo grunt, Wild Dogs and Hyena call, Insects and Bull Frogs singing, trees rustle in the wind. Experience the best of Africa at this remote location.

DAY 7

FLY TO KWANDO / AFTERNOON SAFARI

Up to the sound of Lions roaring in the surrounding marshes, breakfast will be offered before we make our way back to the airstrip for the most incredible flight of a lifetime. Enroute to the strip, you can enjoy a small photo safari for those last photos of Moremi’s wildlife. We will take off, flying over the Okavango Delta giving you one of the most remarkable views of the intricate waterways of Africa. Seeing the Okavango Delta from above is an experience hard to beat. This 45min/1hour flight will have you looking out your window the entire time in the air, arriving at the next location before you know it. Upon arrival in the Kwando Reserve, a vehicle awaits with refreshments before we set off for the lodge. Cameras ready as we head into the reserve.

We will drop our things at the lodge, refresh and head out for a quick safari drive before lunch. This location is right on the Kwando River, with Namibia just across the way. Offering you a truly exclusive African bush experience, this destination is entirely outstanding from the others.

We will return to the lodge for lunch and a photographic critique for those interested. With a short break and time to relax, guests will find the ground of the lodge full of life. With hundreds of bird species, you will not have to go too far without an incredible photographic opportunity.

Our evening game drive will consist of photographing the local wildlife such as the magnificent Wild Dogs that roam the area along with Leopard, Lion, Cape Buffalo, Elephant and many bird species such as the Carmine Bee Eaters in their hundreds.

As the sun sets, we will return to the Lodge for dinner with a view, followed by a relaxing evening around the fire under the African stars.

DAYS 8 - 9

SAFARI IN KWANDO PRIVATE RESERVE

These two days will begin with an early breakfast at the lodge over the remarkable lagoon and Kwando River. After a quick photographic brief, we will set out on an exhilarating photo safari through the private reserve where you will witness some of the best wildlife in Botswana. During game drives in this location, exclusivity is easily offered to our photo guests. This private area is home to some spectacular wildlife: Wild Dog compete with Lion over prey while Leopard are seen elusively making their way from tree to tree creating great photo opportunities.

After the morning drives, we will return to the lodge for a fresh lunch where you can relax with great views, take a dip in the pool, or join your photography guide for a photographic tutorial or discussion.

In the afternoon, we will set off for another great photo safari in search for the everything that your camera seeks, ranging from Leopards dwelling in the tree to fighting Hippopotamus. After a lengthy game drive, we will return and fine dine under the stars accompanied with beverages and a relaxing evening.

DAY 10

DEPARTURE DAY

Our last morning will be a bit more relaxing. Our final breakfast will be served around 7am. Guests will have time to make sure all of their photographs have been backed up and get everything packed for our last flight back to Maun. The group will be taken through the bush, providing your last chance to photograph any wildlife before arriving at the airstrip. A final chartered flight will fly over the marshlands of Botswana, bringing guests back to Maun.

This is where we say our goodbyes and fair wells. Upon arrival in Maun, guests will be transferred to Maun International Airport or their accommodation of choice.

DAY 2

FLY INTO NXAI PAN & AFTERNOON SAFARI

Up early for breakfast and we will venture to the airstrip where the chartered plane will be awaiting our arrival. We will take off, flying over the Kalahari Desert of Botswana with breath-taking views of the vast wilderness.

After a short flight, we will arrive at Nxai Pan, where refreshments will be offered. We will take a short drive to the Kwando Nxai Pan Lodge where there is a great chance of spotting wildlife along the way. On arrival at the lodge, we will drop our things, refresh and go on a quick safari game drive before lunch. Lunch will be followed by an afternoon game drive in the Nxai salt flats, holding some remarkable wildlife, very different from the rest of the trip to come.

With a wildlife photographer at you side, you will have the opportunity to photograph some remarkable wildlife sightings. Waterholes bring large congregations of Elephants, Kudu, Zebra and Springbok, creating unique wildlife photo opportunities. In the grasses and on the hunt, Lions and Leopards can be seen, along with Cheetah that roam the flatlands of this beautiful wilderness.

We will return for dinner where you can relax under the stars around the fire, listening to the sounds of hyena nearby. (Here, a short evening wildlife photographic tutorial will take place)

DAY 4

FLY TO MOREMI / AFTERNOON SAFARI

Up early for breakfast and the group will take a short drive to the airstrip. Enroute we will stop at any photographic interests. We will board the chartered airplane and fly off, over the unexplored wilderness of Botswana and head to the South of the Okavango Delta, just outside of Moremi Game Reserve.

As our safari vehicle awaits, guests can get their camera gear ready for what we may come across as we make our way to the Kwando Pom Pom Safari Lodge. After getting you settled into your rooms, we will then set out for your first photo safari in Moremi.

Depending on water levels, we will either explore the wildlife by boat or land. Here we will search for and photograph wildlife on land and semi submerged in water such as Hippopotamus, Giraffe, Elephant, Lechwe, Lion, Leopard, Wild Dog, numerous bird species and more.

We will return for Lunch and later commence on another adventitious photographic safari to capture the very bast of Moremi’s wildlife. At the end of the day, we will return to the lodge and relax followed by dinner. (A wildlife photographic tutorial will take place).
