Wildlife Photographer Mark A Fernley - Untamed Photo Safaris

MARK A FERNLEY

CO-OWNER & WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER

Photographer & Co-Founder

Mark A. Fernley is a British wildlife photographer, photographic safari host, and the owner and co-founder of Untamed Photo Safaris. Mark has spent many years photographing wildlife across the African continent, working in environments that range from dense rainforests and wetlands to open savannah, bushland, and arid desert landscapes. His experience is built on extensive time in the field and a deep understanding of animal behaviour developed through long-term observation.

Mark is particularly well known for his wildlife photography in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, where Untamed Photo Safaris operates its photographic tours. He specialises in East African wildlife photography and is regarded as one of the leading photographic safari hosts in the region. His work is especially recognised from the Serengeti, Amboseli, and the Masai Mara, as well as for his gorilla photography in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

At Untamed Photo Safaris, Mark plays a central role both creatively and operationally. He is the lead photographic host on safari, works directly with guests in the field, and is also the owner and primary content creator for the company. Every itinerary is shaped by his experience, with a focus on ethical wildlife encounters and strong photographic potential rather than rushed schedules.

Wildlife Photography & Field Expertise

Mark’s wildlife photography is driven by a strong artistic vision combined with deep field craft. His work focuses on capturing authentic behaviour, mood, and atmosphere, using light, composition, and perspective to tell meaningful visual stories. Rather than chasing constant sightings, his approach encourages patience and observation, allowing moments to unfold naturally.

A defining aspect of Mark’s work is his expertise in hide photography and low-angle perspectives. He is highly skilled at working from photographic hides, where long periods of stillness and anticipation are often required. Mark is known for his ability to remain focused for extended periods, waiting for the precise alignment of behaviour and light that leads to truly compelling images. His low-angle photography places the viewer at eye level with wildlife, creating immersive and emotionally engaging results.

Years spent in the field have given Mark an exceptional understanding of animal behaviour. He reads tracks, interprets vocalisations, and recognises subtle behavioural cues that signal movement or interaction. This allows him to stay ahead of the action and position guests before key moments unfold, a skill that consistently results in stronger photographic opportunities. His photography reflects this anticipation, shaped by intention rather than chance.

Mark is also highly respected as an educator, both in the field and online. He teaches wildlife photography with clarity and patience, offering practical guidance on composition, timing, and camera settings. His teaching style supports photographers at all experience levels and encourages long-term growth beyond the safari itself.

Life on Safari & Guest Experience

As a photographic safari host, Mark brings a calm, confident, and respectful presence to every Untamed Photo Safaris journey. His steady leadership creates an environment where guests feel supported and relaxed, even during fast-moving or technically demanding situations. At the same time, he brings genuine enthusiasm and enjoyment to each safari, making the experience both productive and enjoyable.

Mark is always guest focused. He ensures that all photographers receive equal attention and opportunity, regardless of skill level, and he remains attentive to individual needs throughout the safari. Ethics and conservation sit at the core of his approach, with animal welfare always taking priority. Guests learn how to achieve strong images through patience, positioning, and respectful practice.

His extensive knowledge of camera bodies and photographic systems allows him to provide quick and effective technical support in the field. Back at camp, Mark continues to host with the same care and energy, ensuring guests feel comfortable, engaged, and fully immersed in the safari experience.
