TANZANIA PHOTO SAFARIS
Small-group and private wildlife photography safaris across the Serengeti, Ndutu, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Tanzania’s most rewarding photographic regions.
Why Tanzania Is Exceptional for Wildlife Photography
Tanzania is one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife photography destinations, known for the Serengeti, the Great Migration, Ndutu’s calving season, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire’s elephant herds. From vast open plains and predator-rich grasslands to dramatic volcanic landscapes and ancient baobab country, Tanzania offers extraordinary variety for photographers.
Our Tanzania photo safaris are designed for photographers who want more than a standard safari. With small groups, expert photographic guidance, carefully planned routes and meaningful time in the field, each journey is built around light, behaviour, positioning and the best seasonal wildlife opportunities.

Tailor-Made Private Tanzania Photo Safaris
For photographers who prefer a more personal and flexible experience, we also design private Tanzania photo safaris around your goals, travel dates and preferred photographic subjects. Whether you want to focus on the Great Migration in the Serengeti, Ndutu’s calving season, big cats, elephants in Tarangire or the dramatic landscapes of Ngorongoro Crater, a private safari allows the itinerary to be shaped entirely around your photography.

Best Time for a Tanzania Photo Safari
Tanzania offers exceptional wildlife photography through much of the year, but each season brings different wildlife movement, landscapes, light and travel conditions. The best time to visit depends on whether you want to photograph the Great Migration calving season, big cats, river crossings, dry-season wildlife or quieter green-season conditions.
JANUARY to FEBRUARY
Great Migration Calving Season
An excellent time for Tanzania photo safaris, with the Great Migration calving season in Ndutu and the southern Serengeti, newborn wildebeest, predator activity and dramatic green landscapes.
March to MAY
Rainy Season, Not Recommended
Heavy rains can bring flooding, difficult road conditions and reduced access in some areas, so we do not usually recommend Tanzania safari travel during these months.
JUNE
Excellent Wildlife Photography
A strong month for Tanzania wildlife photography, with improving dry-season conditions, active wildlife, beautiful light and excellent opportunities across the northern safari circuit.
July to August
High Season and River Crossings
A superb time for Tanzania photo safaris, with excellent wildlife viewing across the Serengeti and the beginning of the dramatic river crossing season in the north.
September TO OCTOBER
Migration Return and Dry-Season Action
A great period for wildlife photography as the wildebeest migration begins returning to Tanzania from the Masai Mara, with strong predator activity and productive dry-season conditions.
NOVEMBER to December
Short Rains and Quieter Parks
The short rains bring fresh landscapes, fewer vehicles and softer conditions for photography, although this season can be less predictable and is not always ideal.
TOP LOCATIONS IN TANZANIA FOR WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY

Serengeti Photo Safaris
The Serengeti is Tanzania’s most iconic wildlife photography destination, known for vast open plains, big cats, dramatic light and the movement of the Great Migration. From resident predators to seasonal wildebeest herds, it offers some of the most rewarding and varied photographic opportunities in Africa.
Best for: Big cats | Great Migration | Open plains photography
Ndutu & Southern Serengeti
Ndutu and the southern Serengeti are best known for the Great Migration calving season, when huge numbers of wildebeest gather on the open plains. This is one of the most dramatic times for photography, with newborn calves, predator activity, big cats, green landscapes and fast-changing behaviour.
Central Serengeti
Central Serengeti offers strong year-round wildlife photography, with resident big cats, open plains and classic Serengeti landscapes. It is especially rewarding for lions, leopards, cheetahs and everyday predator behaviour, making it a valuable region outside the peak migration periods.
Northern Serengeti
Northern Serengeti is best known for dramatic migration movement and river crossings during the dry season. It offers excellent opportunities for photographing wildebeest herds, predator encounters, quieter landscapes and the more remote feeling of the Serengeti during one of its most exciting wildlife seasons.
Ngorongoro Crater Photo Safaris
Ngorongoro Crater is one of Tanzania’s most distinctive wildlife photography locations, offering dense wildlife populations within a dramatic volcanic landscape. Its compact ecosystem creates excellent opportunities for photographing lions, elephants, buffalo, hyenas, birdlife and, with luck, black rhino.
For photographers, the crater is especially valuable for classic wildlife portraits, dramatic backdrops and a wide variety of subjects in a relatively small area. It is a strong addition to a northern Tanzania photo safari, particularly when combined with Serengeti and Tarangire.
Best for: Wildlife portraits | Dramatic landscapes | Lions and black rhino

Tarangire Photo Safaris
Tarangire offers a different side of northern Tanzania, with ancient baobab trees, open woodlands, seasonal swamps and some of the best elephant photography in East Africa. During the dry season, wildlife gathers around the Tarangire River, creating excellent opportunities for photographing elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, lions and varied birdlife.
For photographers, Tarangire is especially rewarding because of its atmosphere, warm light and distinctive landscapes. It is a strong location for wide environmental images, elephant herds, baobab compositions and quieter wildlife photography away from the busiest safari routes.
Best for: Elephants | Baobabs | Dry-season wildlife photography
Specialist Tanzania Photo Safari Guidance
Tanzania is one of Africa’s most rewarding countries for wildlife photography, but timing and location choice matter. From Ndutu’s calving season and the Serengeti’s migration routes to Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire’s dry-season wildlife, every region has its own rhythm, light and photographic potential.
Our Tanzania photo safaris are planned around these seasonal movements, giving photographers the best possible opportunities in the field. With small groups, professional photographic guidance and carefully considered itineraries, we focus on light, behaviour, positioning and ethical wildlife photography rather than simply moving from sighting to sighting.
