SAFARI AVAILABILITY
This Tanzania photo safari is designed for photographers who want to experience the Great Migration calving season in the Ndutu region, one of the most dramatic predator-prey windows in East Africa. Each group is limited to a maximum of 3 guests, with a dedicated photo host, private photographic vehicle and one row per photographer.
Tanzania Calving Season Photo Safari Overview
This 9-day Tanzania Calving Season Photo Safari is designed for photographers who want to experience one of the most dramatic windows of the Great Migration. Based primarily in the Ndutu region of the southern Serengeti ecosystem, this itinerary is timed for the wildebeest calving season, when vast herds gather on the short-grass plains and predator activity can be at its most intense.
The safari focuses on newborn wildebeest, herd movement, predator-prey behaviour, cheetah action, lions, hyenas, jackals, vultures, dust, golden light and the raw storytelling potential of the calving season. Unlike a fast-moving itinerary that tries to cover too much ground, this safari spends meaningful time in Ndutu, allowing photographers to stay close to the action and respond to wildlife behaviour as it unfolds.
After the Ndutu section, the journey continues to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for a full-day photographic safari on the crater floor. This adds a very different photographic environment to the itinerary, with opportunities for high-density wildlife, dramatic crater landscapes, lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, flamingos and classic East African scenes.
With a maximum of 3 guests per group, each photographer has their own row in the vehicle, alongside a dedicated photo host, local driver-guide and private photographic vehicle.

Why Join This TANZANIA Photo Safari?
This itinerary is designed for photographers who want to experience one of the most intense and behaviour-rich moments of the Great Migration. The calving season is powerful, emotional and highly unpredictable, offering extraordinary photographic opportunities for those who want to document nature at its rawest.
Great Migration Calving Season
Photograph the short-grass plains of Ndutu during calving season, when vast wildebeest herds gather and newborn life transforms the landscape into one of East Africa’s most dramatic wildlife events.
Strong Predator-Prey Interaction
This is one of the best times of year for predator behaviour in Tanzania, with lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals and vultures closely following the herds. It is not a safari for the faint of heart, but it offers powerful storytelling opportunities.
Cheetah & Big Cat Photography
Ndutu is especially strong for cheetah photography during this season, with open plains, active predators and excellent opportunities for behaviour-based images. Lions, hyenas and other predators are also a major focus.
Five Nights in Ndutu
Spend meaningful time in the heart of the calving season region, giving photographers the flexibility to follow herd movement, work with changing light and respond to wildlife behaviour as it unfolds.
Full Day in Ngorongoro Crater
Finish the safari with a full-day photographic experience on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, offering a completely different landscape and opportunities for lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, flamingos and high-density wildlife.
Photographer-Led Guidance
Travel with Mark or Jaren Fernley in a private photographic vehicle, with a maximum of 3 guests per group, one row per photographer and practical field guidance throughout the safari.

Designed by Photographers, for Photographers
This is not a standard safari with photography added on. Every part of the experience, from the vehicle setup and field guidance to the recommended equipment, is designed around the practical needs of wildlife photographers working during the Ndutu calving season.
Professional Field Guidance
This safari is led by Mark or Jaren Fernley, professional wildlife photographers and co-founders of Untamed Photo Safaris. Throughout the safari, your photo host will help you work with light, behaviour, positioning, composition and camera settings in real field conditions.
Guidance is practical, flexible and shaped around the opportunities in front of you, from newborn life and herd movement to predator-prey behaviour and fast-changing action on the plains.
Recommended Camera Gear
We recommend bringing a DSLR or mirrorless camera, a wide-angle or mid-range lens, and a telephoto lens of at least 400mm. A 500mm or 600mm lens is ideal for more distant subjects, birds, predators, smaller wildlife and compressed compositions.
A 70-200mm lens is also highly useful for closer subjects, environmental wildlife scenes, vehicle-based photography and storytelling compositions. A full recommended equipment list will be shared with confirmed guests before departure.
Photographic Safari Vehicles
Each group is limited to a maximum of 3 guests, with one row per photographer in a private photographic vehicle.
This gives you space for long lenses, easier positioning and more flexibility when working with fast-moving sightings, open plains wildlife and predator-prey encounters during the calving season.

Safari Location
This Tanzania Calving Season Photo Safari focuses on two highly rewarding photographic locations: the Ndutu region of the southern Serengeti ecosystem and the Ngorongoro Crater. Together, they offer a powerful combination of calving season action, predator-prey behaviour, open plains photography and high-density wildlife.

Ndutu, Southern Serengeti Ecosystem
Ndutu is the main focus of this safari and one of the most important locations for photographing the Great Migration calving season. During February, large wildebeest and zebra herds gather on the short-grass plains, creating opportunities for newborn life, herd movement, predator activity, dust, golden light and dramatic open-space compositions.
This region is especially strong for behaviour-based photography. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals and vultures often follow the herds, creating intense predator-prey interactions and fast-changing wildlife encounters. For photographers, Ndutu offers the chance to work with powerful stories of new life, survival, movement and the raw energy of the migration.
NGORONGORO CRATER
The Ngorongoro Crater adds a completely different photographic environment to the itinerary. This wildlife-rich volcanic caldera offers dramatic landscapes, high concentrations of animals and the chance to photograph a wide variety of species in a single day.
During the full-day crater safari, photographic opportunities may include lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, hyenas, flamingos, zebra, wildebeest, gazelles, birdlife and sweeping crater scenery. It is a strong final contrast to Ndutu, adding variety, scale and classic northern Tanzania wildlife photography to the journey.
Luxury Safari Accommodation
This Tanzania Calving Season Photo Safari uses a carefully selected combination of luxury tented camps, lodges and an Arusha hotel, chosen for comfort, location, service and access to key wildlife areas. Each property has been selected to support the rhythm of a photographic safari, with early starts, long days in the field, comfortable spaces to rest and time to recharge equipment between activities.
In Ndutu, guests stay in a luxury mobile tented camp positioned to keep the group close to the calving season action. This allows photographers to spend more time in the field and remain within reach of the herds, predators and open plains that make this region so rewarding in February.
Near Ngorongoro Crater, accommodation is selected for convenient access to the crater descent route, allowing guests to maximise their full day of photography on the crater floor. Throughout the itinerary, the accommodation balances comfort, atmosphere and photographic access, giving guests a luxury safari experience while staying close to the wildlife and landscapes that define this journey.
