Tanzania Great Migration Photo Safari Overview
This 8-day Tanzania Great Migration Photo Safari is designed for photographers who want a focused Northern Serengeti experience during one of Africa’s most dramatic wildlife events. Timed for the seasonal movement of wildebeest herds towards the Mara River, this itinerary is built around migration photography, possible river crossings, predator encounters and powerful wildlife storytelling.
The safari is based in the Northern Serengeti, a region known for vast herds, open grasslands, river systems, dust, movement and dramatic predator-prey interactions. During this period, wildebeest and zebra may gather in large numbers as they move through the region, creating opportunities to photograph herd movement, tension at the river, crossings, crocodile encounters, big cats and scavenger activity
.
Unlike a safari that tries to cover multiple regions, this itinerary is intentionally focused. By staying in the Northern Serengeti, guests have more time in the migration zone, fewer long transfers and a better chance of responding to wildlife movement as it unfolds. Overnight: Entara Esirai Migration Camp
DAYS 3 - 7
Northern Serengeti Great Migration Photography
Spend five full days focused on the Great Migration in the Northern Serengeti. This region is one of the most important areas for migration photography, especially when wildebeest and zebra move through the landscape and gather near the Mara River.
Each day will be shaped around wildlife movement, light and field conditions. The focus may include herd movement, dust, river tension, possible crossings, crocodile activity, predator behaviour, scavengers, open plains wildlife and quieter storytelling moments within the migration.
The Mara River can be unpredictable, and crossings can never be guaranteed. However, by spending several days in the region, the itinerary allows time to wait, observe and respond if herds begin to gather or move towards the river. When crossing activity is not happening, the Northern Serengeti still offers excellent photographic opportunities, including lions, cheetahs, hyenas, elephants, giraffes, topi, zebra, wildebeest, birdlife, big skies and dramatic light.
Throughout this section, your photo host will help with field decisions, positioning, camera settings, composition and storytelling. The goal is not only to photograph the obvious action, but to build a wider visual story of the migration, from scale and movement to behaviour, atmosphere and quieter details.
Photography Focus: Wildebeest migration, possible Mara River crossings, herd movement, dust, predator behaviour, crocodiles, scavengers, golden light, wide landscapes and storytelling images.
Overnight: Entara Esirai Migration Camp
DAY 8
Fly from Kogatende to Kilimanjaro International Airport
Enjoy a final morning in the Northern Serengeti before transferring to Kogatende Airstrip for your scheduled flight directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport. From here, guests can connect with their onward international departure.
Photography Focus: Final morning safari opportunity and departure.
End Point: Kilimanjaro International Airport, Tanzania
Guests should book international flights departing no earlier than 5:00pm on this day.

Designed by Photographers, for Photographers
This is not a standard safari with photography added on. Every part of the experience, from the vehicle setup and field guidance to the recommended equipment, is designed around the practical needs of wildlife photographers.
Professional Field Guidance
This safari is hosted by Mark or Jaren Fernley, professional wildlife photographers and co-founders of Untamed Photo Safaris. Throughout the safari, your photo host will help you work with light, behaviour, positioning, composition and camera settings in real field conditions. Guidance is practical, flexible and shaped around the photographic opportunities in front of you.
Open Vehicle for Migration Photography
For this itinerary, an open safari vehicle is used to give better visibility and flexibility around possible river crossing situations. This allows photographers to follow movement, assess angles, watch riverbank activity and respond quickly as wildlife behaviour changes.
Migration Photography Technique
Great Migration photography is about more than waiting for a crossing. We will help guests look for herd movement, dust, hesitation, river tension, predator behaviour, wide environmental scenes and quieter details that build a stronger photographic story.
Recommended Camera Gear
We recommend bringing a DSLR or mirrorless camera with strong autofocus and good low-light performance. A longer telephoto lens is strongly recommended, ideally around 500mm or more, for riverbank activity, predators, distant herds, crocodiles and tighter wildlife portraits.
A 70-200mm lens is also highly useful for wider wildlife scenes, closer subjects, vehicle-based photography and storytelling compositions. A second camera body can be very helpful, particularly when switching between long telephoto work and wider migration scenes without changing lenses in dusty or fast-moving conditions.

Safari Location
This itinerary combines three very different photographic environments, each chosen for the type of wildlife, light and creative opportunities it can offer photographers.

NORTHERN SERENGETI - TANZANIA
This Tanzania Great Migration Photo Safari is based in the Northern Serengeti, one of the most important regions for photographing the wildebeest migration and possible Mara River crossings. During July, large herds may move through the area as they travel north, creating opportunities for dramatic movement, dust, river tension, predator activity and powerful wildlife storytelling.
The Northern Serengeti offers a strong mix of open grasslands, river systems, rocky outcrops, rolling hills and big skies. For photographers, this creates a wide range of possible images, from sweeping migration scenes and environmental compositions to tighter portraits, predator behaviour and fast-moving action.
A key reason for staying focused in this region is flexibility. Migration activity can change quickly, and by spending several days in the Northern Serengeti, the itinerary gives photographers more time to follow herd movement, wait near key areas and respond when river crossing opportunities or predator encounters begin to unfold.
Luxury Safari Accommodation
This safari uses a carefully selected combination of luxury lodges, tented camps and specialist safari properties, chosen for their comfort, location and access to key photographic areas. The accommodation is designed to keep you close to the wildlife while still offering space to rest, review images and recharge between field sessions.
In Amboseli and the Masai Mara, guests stay in comfortable safari properties with excellent access to the surrounding wildlife areas. At Shompole, the photo hide experience is connected to a luxury lodge, allowing guests to return during the middle of the day to rest, refresh, review images and enjoy time in comfort before heading back into the hides.
Expect warm hospitality, good food, private space and thoughtfully chosen locations that support both relaxation and serious photographic focus throughout the journey.
