Republic of the Congo Photo Safari Overview
This 13-day Republic of the Congo rainforest photo safari is designed for photographers who want a rare, immersive experience in one of Africa’s most remote and least photographed wilderness regions. Travelling through Odzala-Kokoua National Park, this expedition focuses on western lowland gorillas, forest elephants, bai clearings, river journeys and Congo Basin rainforest photography.
The journey moves through three distinct rainforest areas: Ngaga, known for western lowland gorilla tracking and closed-canopy forest; Lango, where bai walks, forest streams and wildlife-rich clearings create unique photographic opportunities; and Mboko, where river systems, savanna edges and forest habitats offer a different perspective on the Congo Basin. The itinerary includes three gorilla tracking permits, along with guided forest walks, river activities, bai exploration and nocturnal opportunities.
Unlike a traditional vehicle-based safari, this experience is built around walking, tracking, river movement and quiet observation in dense rainforest environments. With guidance from professional photo hosts and expert local rainforest guides, the focus is on patience, fieldcraft, ethical wildlife encounters and creating meaningful images in one of Africa’s most remarkable ecosystems.

Detailed Safari Itinerary
This Republic of the Congo photo safari has been carefully designed to move through three distinct rainforest environments within the Odzala-Kokoua region. Each stage of the journey offers a different photographic focus, from western lowland gorilla tracking and closed-canopy rainforest to bai clearings, river systems, forest walks and savanna-edge habitats.
This is an active rainforest expedition, not a traditional vehicle-based safari. DAY 2
Fly to Odzala-Kokoua National Park
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the scheduled flight from Brazzaville to Odzala-Kokoua National Park. On arrival, continue through savanna and rainforest landscapes towards Ngaga, your base for the first stage of the expedition. This evening includes a briefing on gorilla tracking, rainforest safety and the photographic opportunities ahead.
Photography Focus: Rainforest arrival, travel landscapes and expedition briefing
Overnight: Ngaga Lodge
DAYS 3 - 5
Western Lowland Gorilla Tracking & Closed-Canopy Rainforest
Spend three full days based at Ngaga, a rainforest environment known for western lowland gorilla tracking and primate research. The focus here is on quiet, patient photography in closed-canopy forest, with opportunities to track western lowland gorillas, explore forest trails and photograph the atmosphere, textures and smaller details of the Congo Basin.
This is a very different photographic environment from an open savannah safari, with low light, dense vegetation and fleeting wildlife encounters shaping the experience. Your hosts will help you approach these conditions with realistic expectations, technical preparation and careful fieldcraft.
Photography Focus: Western lowland gorillas, primates, rainforest atmosphere and forest details
Overnight: Ngaga Lodge
DAY 6
Transfer Through the Rainforest to Lango
After a final morning in the Ngaga area, the journey continues deeper into the Odzala-Kokoua ecosystem. Travel through rainforest and savanna habitats before reaching the Lango area, where bai clearings, forest streams and wetland environments create a completely different photographic setting.
Depending on conditions, the transfer may include a combination of vehicle travel, walking and water-based activity, introducing the group to the wetter, more immersive side of the Congo Basin.
Photography Focus: Rainforest transition, bai landscapes, waterways and habitat variety
Overnight: Lango Lodge
DAYS 7 - 9
Bai Walks, Forest Wildlife & River Systems
Spend three full days exploring the Lango area, one of the most atmospheric parts of the itinerary. This stage is focused on bai walks, forest streams, river systems and wildlife movement through open rainforest clearings. Forest buffalo, birdlife, monkeys and the possibility of forest elephants create a very different photographic rhythm from the gorilla-focused days at Ngaga.
Photography here is about patience and observation, watching how wildlife uses the bai, working with reflections, mist, forest edges and the layered light of the rainforest.
Photography Focus: Bai clearings, forest buffalo, forest elephants, birdlife, monkeys and rainforest landscapes
Overnight: Lango Lodge
DAY 10
Transfer to Mboko Lodge
After a final morning in the Lango area, travel onwards towards Mboko, where forest, river and savanna habitats come together. This part of the itinerary introduces more open landscapes, riverine forest and waterways, offering a broader view of the Odzala-Kokoua ecosystem.
The afternoon may include time to settle into camp, explore the river deck or join a gentle activity depending on conditions and timing.
Photography Focus: Forest-to-savanna transition, river landscapes and wildlife habitat
Overnight: Mboko Lodge
DAYS 11 - 12
River Journeys, Kayaking & Final Rainforest Exploration
Spend two full days based at Mboko, with a focus on river journeys, kayaking, forest walks and savanna-edge wildlife photography. This area offers a different pace, with opportunities to photograph from the water, explore forest edges and look for birdlife, monkeys, forest elephants, buffalo and other wildlife within the wider Congo Basin landscape.
These final days bring together many of the elements that make Odzala-Kokoua so unique: river systems, quiet forest movement, changing habitats and the feeling of being immersed in one of Africa’s most remote rainforest environments.
Photography Focus: River cruises, kayaking, birdlife, forest wildlife, savanna-edge habitats and rainforest landscapes
Overnight: Mboko Lodge
DAY 13
Return to Brazzaville / End of Safari
After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for the scheduled flight back to Brazzaville. On arrival, connect with your onward international flight or continue with any additional arrangements in the city.
Photography Focus: Final rainforest impressions and departure
End Point: Maya-Maya International Airport - Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo
Guests should book international flights departing no earlier than 8:00pm on this day.

Fitness, Health & Expedition Requirements
This is an active rainforest expedition and guests must be comfortable travelling on foot in warm, humid and physically demanding conditions. While the terrain is not usually steep, it can be uneven, muddy and wet, with forest trails, bai walks, river crossings and marshy areas forming part of the experience.
Guests should be able to walk at a steady pace for up to 8 km per day, sometimes for several hours at a time, while carrying their own camera equipment. This itinerary is best suited to guests who are confident walkers and comfortable with active days in remote rainforest environments.
For gorilla tracking, guests may be required to complete health and medical documentation before travel. This may include confirmation that you are fit and healthy, free from symptoms of infectious illness and appropriately vaccinated to help protect the gorillas. A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is also required for entry into the Republic of the Congo.
This is a deeply rewarding photographic expedition, but it is not suitable for guests who are unable to manage active days on foot in hot, humid and unpredictable rainforest conditions.
Designed by Photographers, for Photographers
This is not a traditional safari environment. Rainforest photography requires patience, technical control, field awareness and the ability to adapt quickly to low light, dense vegetation, humidity, movement and fleeting wildlife encounters. This expedition has been shaped for photographers who want more than a standard rainforest experience.
Specialist Rainforest Experience
Mark and Jaren Fernley bring more than 15 years of combined experience photographing in rainforest conditions, from Africa to the Amazon Rainforest.
This background gives guests practical support in one of the most challenging and rewarding environments for wildlife photography.
Recommended Camera Gear
We recommend bringing a DSLR or mirrorless camera with strong low-light performance, a telephoto lens for gorillas and bai wildlife, and a wide-angle or mid-range lens for rainforest scenes, river journeys and environmental images.
A macro lens can also be useful for frogs, insects, forest details and night forest walk opportunities.
Professional Field Guidance
Throughout the expedition, your photo hosts will help you work with light, behaviour, positioning, composition and camera settings in real field conditions.
Guidance is practical, flexible and shaped around the photographic opportunities in front of you.
Rainforest Photography Technique
Dense forest, low light and fast-moving subjects require a different approach from open savannah photography.
We will help guests prepare for autofocus choices, shutter speed, ISO control, stabilisation, quiet movement and the technical realities of working beneath the canopy.

Photography Locations in Odzala-Kokoua National Park
This Republic of the Congo photo safari moves through three distinct areas of Odzala-Kokoua National Park, each offering a different photographic experience. From western lowland gorilla tracking in closed-canopy rainforest to bai clearings, river systems and savanna-edge habitats, the journey is designed to show the diversity of the Congo Basin.

Ngaga Forest
Ngaga is the gorilla-focused stage of the journey, set within dense closed-canopy rainforest adjoining Odzala-Kokoua National Park. This area is known for western lowland gorilla tracking, primate encounters, forest walks and the atmospheric challenge of photographing wildlife in low light and layered vegetation.
Lango Baï
Lango offers one of the most distinctive rainforest environments of the itinerary, where bai clearings, forest streams and wetland habitats create opportunities for forest buffalo, forest elephants, birdlife and quiet observation. This is a place for slow, patient photography, working with reflections, mist, forest edges and wildlife movement through open clearings.
Mboko River & Savanna Edge
Mboko brings together river systems, forest, grassland and savanna-edge habitats, offering a broader view of the Congo Basin ecosystem. Activities may include river journeys, kayaking, forest walks and wildlife observation around waterways, with opportunities for birdlife, monkeys, forest elephants, buffalo and other rainforest species.
Luxury Rainforest Accommodation
This itinerary uses three carefully designed rainforest lodges within the Odzala-Kokoua region, each chosen for its location, atmosphere and access to a different photographic environment. Rather than simply being places to stay, the lodges form part of the journey, connecting guests to gorilla tracking, bai clearings, river systems and the wider Congo Basin landscape.
Guests will stay at Ngaga Lodge, Lango Lodge and Mboko Lodge, each offering a distinct perspective on the rainforest. Expect remote comfort, warm hospitality, raised decks, natural materials, forest views and time to rest, review images and recharge between activities.
This is an expedition-style safari, but it is not basic. The lodges keep guests close to the rainforest while still providing the comfort, food, service and atmosphere needed after active days in the field.
